Before your audience can understand why you are in business, you must understand why you are in business. Knowing your purpose will make it easier for you to reach your target audience and easier to talk to them about your business and what you will do for them.
Step 1: draw a 2 column table and make a list of what and why questions
- Why are we in business?
- Why does our business exist?
- Why did we start our business?
- What is our unique selling point?
- What do people say about our business?
- What would we like people to say about our business?
This is not a full list but a sample of what questions you could ask yourself about your business in the process of finding your purpose.
Step 2: pick 3 words that you feel represent your business
Those words should be words that you would like to resonate with your target audience and be emotionally attached to your brand.
Step 3: pick 3 celebrities that you believe would be great brand advocates for your business
If those 3 celebrities were to be brand advocates for your brand, what is it about their brand that you like and would like to reflect in your business? What is it that they say, do or have done that you see those individuals as great people?
Step 4: write down how you think your business will help your target audience
Think about how your business will positively impact the lives of your target audience. How will they behave, how will they feel and how much easier will their lives be if your business is available to them.
Step 5: bring everything together
Bring everything together to find your business purpose. Your purpose should be as important to you as it will be for your customers. The more they relate to your purpose they will be returning customers and eventually long term clients.
